Digital Painting Tutorial by nortagem Digital Painting Tutorial by nortagem
This is a digital painting tutorial for beginners, and is the second part of Digital Drawing Tutorial.

The first tutorial was successful, and apparently helpful
to many. This tutorial will teach how to take your monochromatic drawing and fill it with colors.

Artistically speaking, this tutorial is very easy.
However, the painting does involve several features in
Photoshop that you may not be used to.

I've tried to make this tutorial as detailed and easy to
understand as I possibly can.

Hope it works! :D

I never understood what everyone meant when they kept saying 'make a Hue/Saturation layer' or a 'Curves' layer until I saw your tutorial.. Everyone seems to fail to mention that to do this you have to have the little 'Adjustments' window showing. Thanks to that one screenshot of yours that showed it, I finally get it!! You have no idea how grateful I am. THANK YOU.

Thanks for the tutorial. Interesting approach to painting, and you seem to have partially solved the underpainting problem which I run into when I digital paint. (I took a few notes as one who is finding the switch from traditional to digital a bit daunting. :D )

But I do wonder if you find that the final product is a little on the dark side. I mean this sort of approach seems to be great for chiaroscuro but doesn't it give you problems with other styles/approaches?

Thank you for your response.
My technique is only a mere suggestion, meant to open your eyes to the wonderful possibilities of digital painting.
Use it as you may, or not at all.
But I don't think applying this technique would inevitably result in a 'dark' outcome at all.
You can achieve very different results using that same technique.
I tend to be dark in most of my works. Maybe even all of them.
However other, more cheerful characters could use the same technique for a brighter painting, IMO.

Thank you very much.
Now I can achieve more with my pen tablet than just let it sit and collect dust.

Personally I like the black and white version better, it just has a nicer feel to it :)
Also when you work with color layers over a black and white painting the colors never come out as nicely as when you just pain in color in the beginning, they have some greyish tint to them.

You know what, I tend to agree with you here - I like the monochromatic version better. I don't think it's the technique to blame as much as it is my choice of colors, or maybe this piece just works best without colors. Either way, I was trying to teach one coloring technique I've just recently discovered myself, even if my own example is far from perfect...

Sure it is. It's cheating, stealing, raping and killing,
not necessarily in that order.
